Hope for the Hopeless
Hope for the Hopeless
Fighting hunger and abuse in America 13 years ago, I moved to Albany NY to help reach out to hurting children who live in drug and gang-infested neighborhoods in Albany. I soon found out that 59%of these children were on subsidized lunches during the school year. So my question was who feeds these children when they are out of school and I took it upon myself to find out. During the first summer in Albany I decided to make 25 lunches and take them to the city park little did I know this was going to be the beginning of a children's feeding program that now feeds over 50,000 meals a year to inner-city children. Because of this one day I realized that in America there are children that go to bed hungry, This experience changed the rest of my life I decided to build a center that would be able to make meals for children who live in these area's that are challenged by poverty and drugs, The first feeding center was built on one of worst corners known for drug and gang violence believe it or not this was the perfect place to be their were so many hurting children. The very day we began construction a 14 year old boy was shot and killed on the very door step of the building we bought to renovate. This insured me that this was the place that needed the most help. The day we opened this feeding center over 150 children from the neighborhood came out to receive a hot meal I knew that this was going to work. Now when children are out of school any day they can receive a free meal Every holiday we have a special meal this Christmas over 200 children came for Christmas dinner. Every summer vacation We have children who we feed help us make over 1000 lunches a day and deliver them to 13 city parks and no child in Albany NY goes Hungry. This month we will complete a new center in the south end of the city that will feed children in another challenging part of the city. This new center will not only meet the nutritional needs but will have a resource center for clothing and other special needs these children have. In any city in America a drug addict or an alcoholic can get a hot meal at city missions but what about a child who is a victim of the drug addict and alcoholics. So my story is a story of hope for the hopeless and help for the helpless and 1 person can still make a difference in their world.
